A fever is part of the body’s protective response to an infection – usually a bacteria or virus. It is not the disease itself creating the heat, but the body’s immune system kicking into action, the innate healing response. The heat of the fever is the very action that is killing the infection, therefore the use of anti-pyretics (such as paracetamol) to lower it may reduce some discomfort but will do nothing to alter the underlying infection and may indeed lengthen the illness.

Obviously there are many naturally supportive things you can do to ease the discomfort during that time. Dr. Jayne Donegan, GP and Homeopath, has a very useful document for managing acute childhood illness or infection. http://www.jayne-donegan.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/articles/2009%20General%20Measures%20website.pdf

Homeopathy can be extremely effective in supporting the body through this process as it does not suppress the fever, but assists the body, enabling a more comfortable and quicker recovery.

Allowing the body’s natural immune response – in this case, fever - to run its course enables it to recognise and fight future infections thereby strengthening the immune system. Using ‘suppressive’ medications denies the body the precious opportunity to learn!
